Business Card Design - The Art of Saying Hello

What does your business card say?

Most companies still overlook the importance of creating a great business card.

Business Card DesignA business card is your first opportunity to tell your story and establish your branding image. Yes, I've been told that many people toss a business card after they've digitally entered it into their email contacts list. However, it's still your first impression, your first or second touch point with a potential client or customer. So make it great. Make it standout. Make it memorable.

Tips for creating a successful business card

  1. Make sure it reflects your branding. Correct colors, logo, messaging, etc.
  2. Make it pop. Don't resort to having Kinko's set it up for you. Hire a professional designer. Your first impression is worth a couple extra bucks.
  3. Take advantage of both sides. Full color printing is very cost effective these days, and many printers offer online solutions at dirt cheap costs.
  4. Stick to the KISS approach (the adage, not the band, in this case) and "keep it simple, stupid." Keep things clean and legible. Go too far off the deep end and you'll lose the function of what a business card is all about.
  5. Be different. Choose an uncoated stock, a die cut or rounded corners.
  6. Make sure your contact info is legible. Some designers (including myself) tend to choose fonts that are too small. Again, remember what a business card is used for.
  7. Take advantage of the back side of the card and list your services. If you find you're usually trading cards quickly at networking events or tradeshows, then your business card could be your one chance to promote what you do. Your card will have someone's attention, even if it's just for a short time. Make an impression.

Creating a successful business card doesn't have to cost a fortune, but it could net you one. A well-designed card will go a long way in making a great impression and helping your brand stand out among the competition.
